Clean or replace filters as required. Step 6.  Check to see if overspeed control is tripped. Reset overspeed control. 6.  ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK Step 1.  Check to see if switches and controls are not in correct positions. Set switches and controls in correct positions (para 2-10). WARNING o  Remove rings, bracelets, wristwatches, and neck chains before working around the locomotive. Jewelry can catch on equipment and cause injury, or may short across an electrical circuit and cause severe burns or electrical shock. o  Be careful not to short out battery terminals.  Do not smoke or use open flame near batteries. Batteries may explode from a spark.  Battery acid is harmful to skin and eyes. Step 2.  Check to see if battery is dead. Recharge or replace battery (para 4-30). Step 3.  Check to see if battery fuse is blown (open). Replace battery fuse. Step 4.  Check to see if starting contactor is not closing. Notify intermediate direct support maintenance. Step 5.  Check for open circuit at start button, operating coil of starting contactors, or control switch. Notify intermediate direct support maintenance. Step 6.  Check to see if engine, air compressor, or main generator armature are frozen up. Notify intermediate direct support maintenance. 4-15
